Manchester United have been crowned the kings of Europe after winning the Champions League final.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s team beat fierce rivals Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 following extra time in Moscow.

Goalkeeper Edwin van de Sar was the hero of the night after saving Nicolas Anelka’s penalty to crown United champions.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored the first goal of the game after 26 minutes, missed a penalty during the shoot out, but his miss was cancelled out when Chelsea skipper John Terry put his penalty wide.

Speaking about his second Champions League final victory, Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It’s the first penalty shoot-out I’ve ever won in a big game. I think there was a bit of fate about it.

“We were fantastic in the first half and could have been three up but then they scored a lucky goal. They were better in the second half. I’m delighted for everyone. It’s an amazing achievement. We deserve it.”
